Ixworth Chicken

The Ixworth is a rare breed chicken breed on the RBST’s watchlist. The variety was developed by Sir Reginald Appleyard in the 1930s at this site near Ixworth, Suffolk.

Ixworth chickens are a dual-purpose breed with great qualities making them an ideal heritage breed to keep. Though slow growing, hens offer upwards of 250 eggs per year and the birds are large enough to provide a substantial meal.
